Inveraray Castle: The Real Duneagle from Downton Abbey

If Inveraray Castle looks familiar, you may remember it as Duneagle Castle, the Scottish estate featured in Downton Abbey’s 2012 Christmas special. While most of the series was filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, the Crawley family’s memorable journey to Scotland brought them here, to the shores of Loch Fyne.

I visited Inveraray Castle during my own travels through Scotland and discovered that its real history is every bit as captivating as its fictional one. Set amid some of the Highlands’ most impressive scenery, the castle stands on the northwest shore of Loch Fyne, surrounded by gardens, parkland and wooded hills.

Today, Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and the seat of Clan Campbell. Its stately rooms, family portraits and remarkable collections tell the story of one of Scotland’s most influential clans.

Inside Inveraray Castle

Inside, visitors can explore the castle’s magnificent state rooms and collections. One of the most memorable is the Armoury Hall, where elaborate displays of polearms, muskets, swords and other weapons cover the walls.

Beyond the weaponry, the castle contains an outstanding collection of furniture, tapestries, paintings and Campbell family portraits, bringing centuries of family history to life.

The Castle Gardens

Beyond the castle, 16 acres of gardens encompass colorful flower beds, parkland and woodland. During the latter part of the 19th century, distinguished guests were invited to plant trees on the estate, as was customary at the time. Among them were Queen Victoria and Scottish explorer David Livingstone.

Before leaving the castle, stop at the Castle Tea Room for something to eat. The town of Inveraray itself is also worth exploring, with several attractions clustered around the shores of Loch Fyne.

Inveraray Jail brings the town’s 19th-century courthouse and prison to life through its historic cells, courtroom and stories of the people once confined there.

The George offers a cozy place to enjoy a meal beside a roaring peat and log fire—or to stay overnight.

Inveraray Bell Tower rewards visitors who climb its 176 steps with sweeping views across Inveraray and Loch Fyne. The tower opens seasonally, so check its current schedule before visiting.

Inveraray Castle as Duneagle

More than a century after Inveraray Castle welcomed distinguished visitors such as Queen Victoria and David Livingstone, it received a different kind of guest: the cast and crew of Downton Abbey.

For the Christmas special, the castle became Duneagle, the home of Lord and Lady Flintshire. Members of the Crawley family traveled there for a summer visit filled with grand dinners, country pursuits, family tensions—and plenty of drama both upstairs and downstairs.

Viewers saw several of the castle’s real rooms, including the Armoury Hall, State Dining Room and Tapestry Drawing Room, along with its grounds and the surrounding Highland scenery.

The Duchess of Argyll later recalled that the cast members were “charming.” She was especially surprised by Rob James-Collier, who played the decidedly less charming footman Thomas Barrow.

What a fabulous experience it must have been for the Duke and Duchess of Argyll to welcome the cast of Downton Abbey into their home. But then, if your home is a castle, what more could you ask for? It’s the stuff of dreams.

Minus the electric bill, of course.
